2010 Annual Convention a huge success

The MOA Postgraduate Convention & Scientific Seminar is more than just an educational program. It’s a time to catch up with colleagues and friends you haven’t seen in a while. It’s a time to reinforce your commitment to the osteopathic profession by participating at the MOA House of Delegates and it’s a time to celebrate leaders at the Presidents Banquet.

This year’s convention, held May 12-15 at the Hyatt Regency Dearborn, was again, a huge success.  With 30 continuing medical education credits offered, this convention hosted sessions that ranged from osteopathic manipulative medicine to cardiology to pain management to the patient centered medical home.

This year’s annual convention hosted 917 registrants, with an additional 185 interns and residents onsite on Thursday to attend a special afternoon session designed specifically to address the educational needs of the new or soon-to-be-new physician.

MOA seated 186 delegates at the MOA’s annual House of Delegates Meeting.  Thirty resolutions were reviewed and voted on by those present at the meeting.

The MOA Board of Trustees elected three new members to its board.  Lawrence Prokop, D.O., of East Lansing will serve a two-year term. In addition, the MOA established two new seats on the board to be occupied solely by osteopathic medical students/interns/residents.  Filling the one-year term board seats are intern/resident Draion Burch, D.O., of Detroit, and medical student Shane Sergent of Okemos.

New MOA President George T. Sawabini, D.O., celebrated his inauguration and broke from tradition with a Friday evening reception.  Dr. Sawabini opted for a modest reception in replacement of the historical presidential banquet as a show of his commitment to strengthening the MOA’s budget.

A record breaking 65 posters were displayed as part of the annual MOA Scientific Research Exhibit Competition.  Each year the MOA hosts the competition to allow students, physicians in training and practicing physicians the opportunity to present their medical and scientific research to the profession.  Judges Lawrence Abramson, D.O., Henry Beckmeyer, D.O., and Anthony Ognjan, D.O., awarded two honorable mentions, and one each of first, second and third place awards.

The MOA was proud to host its tenth annual Michigan Osteopathic Association Practice Manager’s Education Program in conjunction with the MOA’s Annual Convention.  Thirty three attendees received 12.5 credits toward their Certified Medical Office Manager certification through education sessions that included practice marketing, legislative issues, risk management and HIPAA.
